JEALOUS GOD Deut. 4:3 Take heed to yourselves, lest you forget the covenant of the LORD your God which He made with you, and make for yourselves a carved image in the form of anything which the LORD your God has forbidden you. 24 For the LORD your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.
God decided in advance to adopt us into His own family by bringing us to Himself through Jesus Christ. This is what He wanted to do, and it gave Him great pleasure. - EPHESIANS 1:5

For I, the lord your god, am a jealous god,

SUMMARY
Jealousy is good and bad. If it comes from God then it is Holy, if it comes from insecurity or fear, then it is bad. We need to focus on Holy Jealousy. Jealousy can cause turmoil and hurt in our lives and in the lives of those around us, and we may not even know it. Jealousy is defined at its root as: “to become intense red”. It’s usually between 3 people. It’s the fear of LOSING something you already have to someone else.
Q1: Further Define the 2 types of Jealousy in your own group: HOLY vs. HUMAN
Q2: Have you ever found yourself outwardly praising something great that happened to someone you know, while inwardly you were jealous of their success? How can you recognize when you are feeling that way?
Jealousy is always rooted in insecurity and fear.
Q3: Read James 3:16; Proverbs 27:4 How does this passage speak to you?
Q4: Most of the time we feel guilty when we realize we are feeling jealous. Can you think of a time when your jealousy was good, as described in Deuteronomy 4:3? (Think kids, family, etc…)
One of God’s character names is JEALOUS according to Deut.4:3. His jealousy is motivated by something much higher than insecurity or fear. It’s LOVE for His creation. God never reveals things to shame you, He reveals only to heal. One of the reasons that a law for jealousy was created in Num. 5:11-29 was so that it could be addressed if it ever surfaced. If you find yourself being jealous, don’t bury it, bring it out in the open and talk about it.
Q5: Can you think of a time where you buried jealousy, and it ended up getting worse because you did not bring it out in the open?
Q6. Quote: “Jealousy is the art of counting someone else’s blessings instead of your own”. How is this statement true? How can one practically counter those actions?
Q7: What can you do to fight worldly jealousy and embrace holy jealousy?
Pastor ended with a story about a little girl named Susie. She loved her daddy and especially loved the pearls that he gave her at the age of 6. As he tucked her to bed one night, he asked Susie if she loved her daddy and she responded with, “More than anything!”. When he asked if she loved him more than the pearls she hesitated because they meant so much to her. After a day of thinking about this question her dad asked, she came to the conclusion the following evening that she would give up her beautiful pearls because she truly loved her father more than anything. The dad was so pleased to see her response and was already in a position to exchange the imitation pearls with a new set of genuine pearls he had just purchased.
Q8: What pearls is God trusting you to release? What costume jewelry would he love for you to drop? You will never experience the GENUINE until you surrender the IMITATION.
PRAY IT OUT
One of the keys to conquering jealousy in life is to become secure in God’s love for you. A person cannot give away what he does not possess himself. How God thinks about you is foundational to overcoming any insecurities and fears one faces. If jealousy has found an open door into your relationship, begin by asking God to unroot any previous hurts and lies you believe about yourself and hold fast to the TRUTH of how HE thinks of you. You are valuable, chosen, and precious in His sight. YOU ARE ENOUGH!
