Not This Again Week 2 – Self-Awareness
Romans 12:3 For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.
Philippians 2:3-8 Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
“A humble knowledge of thyself is a surer way to God than a deep search after learning.”
- Thomas a Kempis, The Imitation of Christ
Psalm 139:1-6, 23-24 Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting

TITLE: NOT THIS AGAIN
OVERVIEW: In this series, we are looking at reoccurring themes in our relationships that cause tension. How to address the tension and grow rather than remain stuck or unaware that we are stressing people out.
FOCUS VERSE: Philippians 2:3-8
BOTTOM LINE: Self-Awareness Defined: "Self-awareness is the ability to focus on yourself and how your actions, thoughts, or emotions do or don't align with your internal standards and values.
DIGGING DEEPER: We all have little things in life that irritate us. We don’t know why they bother us so much, but they do. They can be things in a relationship, with our family, with our children, or even ourselves!
Q1. What things in your life, that seem small, bother you? • Step back and look at your own habits. Is there anything you do that could or likely does irritate others? As Pastor Joel said, “I stress people out” • “How you react outwardly is a reflection of what is happening inwardly.” – The most profound quote of the en5re sermon in my opinion. Elaborate on this.
Q2. Can you think of any time where you had a reaction to something that was triggered by what was happening inside? Have you ever overreacted to a situation and looked back to discover that it was because of some inner turmoil you hadn’t dealt with? • Romans 12:3 – humility is an accurate view of yourself. • Quote - “A humble knowledge of thyself is a surer way to God than a deep search after learning.” - Thomas a Kempis, The Imitation of Christ • Read Phil 2:3-8 and talk about how Jesus gave us an example of how to live our daily lives.
APPLICATION:
- What are the gifts I have? How can they help others? How could they hurt?
- Ask Someone: What is it like living with me? (don’t respond, just listen.)
- The goal of self-awareness should be greater self-acceptance and less harsh self-judgment. How are you doing?
Read Psalm 139 1-6:23-24 and close in prayer.
